Abstract
In the automotive industry, increasing use is made of high-strength steel sheet with tensile strengths in excess of 600N/mm2. Use of these materials places increased demands on the wear-resistance of the press tools used. The substrate materials for such tools is typically cast iron, tool steel, cast tool steel or steels formed by powder metallurgy. In each case, a range of suitable hardening processes can be used, including classical heat-treatment, nitriding or bonding or coating using PVD or CVD. Even greater wear resistance can be obtained using newly-developed materials such as steels with induced plasticity or multiphase steels with tensile strengths in the range 1500 N/mm2.
