Abstract

This review gives an overview of analytical principles, clinical applications and quality assurance of "Point-of-Care Testing" (POCT). The broad spectrum of analytical methods ranges from simple blood glucose determination to complex haemostaseological analysis. Due to the elimination of sample transport and preanalytical preparation steps and due to the rapid availability of bed-side test results, POCT can help to make decisions on diagnostic or therapeutic measures, in some cases earlier than when applying conventional central lab diagnostics. This provides clinical benefits for the patient as well as economical advantages for the health system. Using state-of-the-art POCT devices and methods, sophisticated laboratory analyses are made possible under certain clinical cinditions, even when being performed by untrained personnel.
