Abstract

Analytical solutions are presented for a deep tunnel near a fault zone subjected to incident plane P and SV waves. It is assumed that the longitudinal tunnel is parallel to the fault, and the ground, the fault zone and the liner are homogeneous, isotropic and linear elastic. The incident wave is assumed to be perpendicular to the tunnel axis, and thus the plane strain condition is applied. In the proposed solution, the tunnel, the ground and the fault are tied with each other. The potentials of the diffracted wave by the tunnel are expanded by Bessel-Fourier series to obtain the solution. The analytical solution is verified by comparing its results with those obtained from the finite element method. Parametric analyses are carried out to investigate the influence of frequency of the incident wave, elastic modulus ratio between the fault and the ground as well as width of the fault on the seismic response of tunnels near a fault zone.
