Abstract

This chapter considers the analytical applications of the resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization mass spectrometry (REMPI-MS). It provides a detailed overview of selected examples for the utilization of REMPI-MS regarding the detection of organic trace compounds in complex samples. The combination of REMPI with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ToFMS) has been proven to be an excellent tool for monitoring fast dynamic processes with rapid changes of concentration profiles. The chapter illustrates demonstratively the application of REMPI for the simultaneous fast on-line detection of traces of chemical compounds in the complex mixture of exhaust gases. Coffee roasting is an example of a food technological process, where REMPI-ToFMS could contribute valuable information for the understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Combination of gas chromatography with REMPI-ToFMS has the distinction that because of the softness of REMPI, a two-dimensional separation according to chromatographic retention time and mass-to-charge ratio can be realized.
