Abstract

An extraction tailing in the Purex process has been investigated in pure HNO//3 systems by consecutive multi-stage extraction as well as by batch extraction with different initial Pu concentrations. The Pu species in aqueous phases from multi-stage extraction and in diluted acid are characterized by laser-induced photoacoustic spectroscopy. In multi-stage extractions, no tailing effect is observed, whereas the change in distribution coefficients is found in batch extractions at Puconc. less than 10** minus **5 mol/L. The observed phenomena are discussed.
