Abstract
Truck overtaking manoeuvres on motorways can provoke conflict situations. Extensive blocking of the overtaking lane and sudden lane changes can lead to a line of vehicles behind the truck as well as abrupt braking of approaching cars. Improved sensor technologies and driver assistance systems enable road users to coordinate driving manoeuvers. In the future, these cooperative driving manoeuvres can help to improve the efficiency and safety of truck overtaking manoeuvers for all road users involved. This paper presents a study (N = 33) conducted in a dynamic truck driving simulator. The aim of this study is to analyse truck-overtaking manoeuvres on motorways with varying parameters and to identify features and characteristics of those manoeuvres. The willingness of truck drivers to cooperate with and without a cooperative driver assistance system will be assessed and the acceptance for the system is measured. The results of this study are the basis for the development of a driver assistance system to support cooperation during overtaking manoeuvres.
