Abstract
Gas-phase core electron binding energies have been determined for [Fe(CO)4]2CH2, [CpMn(CO)2]2CH2, (CpCoCO)2CH2, (CpRhCO)2CH2, and several structurally related compounds. The binding-energy data indicate that the CH2 groups in the μ-CH2 complexes are highly negatively charged, especially in the manganese, cobalt and rhodium compounds. Data for Fe(CO)4C2H4 indicate that the CH2 groups in this compound are negatively charged but less so than in the μ-CH2 compounds. Data for Fe3(CO)12 suggest the presence of both terminal and bridging carbonyl groups.
