Abstract
We report results of a 1-year follow-up study of 87 alcohol dependent patients who had been detoxified in an standardized outpatient treatment program using a combination of carbamazepine and tiapride. Only one patient dropped out of treatment. 86 patients entered the consecutive 3-month motivational phase of this outpatient treatment model. 48 (45%) terminated this phase succesfully. 44 out of the 48 patients completed the following outpatient rehabilitation. These findings indicate the relative medical safety of outpatient detoxification under defined conditions and the efficacy of the concommitant "motivational" psychotherapeutic approach.
