Abstract
Developments in specifications and educational material within the last years for aluminium constructions have led to basic documents allowing an enhanced and more reliable design procedure for the engineer, the authorities, the client and user of a structure. The new Eurocode 9 (ENV 1993) is thereby the cornerstone of these developments, accompanied by parallel developments in national codes. Joining technology is especially diverse in light metal structures with the different application areas and exercises a significant effect on the carrying capacity of the structures. The present article is composed of five parts, Basic information on joining techniques in light metal structures, the state-of-the-art of design specifications, an outline of design rules according to the Eurocode with a compilation of fully calculated design cases, and prospective developments for the execution and quality classification of structures. The publication is intended as a contribution to a companion document for the Eurocode 9. In the present context detailed background information will not be included, especially no analytical or experimental results on the various strength values or influencing parameters. Reference will be made to existing literature.
