N2 - The Superluminescent diode (SLD) as transmitter for fiber optical communication systems finds its place between injection laser and LED. The diode structure, operation mode and relevant diode properties are discussed. The static properties are reviewed with special emphasis on light power, linewidth and wavelength as well as beamwidth. In addition the dynamic behaviour of the SLD is treated. Finally the properties of LED, SLD and injection laser are compared with respect to system properties.
