Abstract

Computing in Civil Engineering is an active field of research and teaching, focusing on the development and dissemination of information and communication technologies. For example, complex numerical analyses can be conducted in near real time using new computational methods and concepts. Modeling buildings, processes and machines can be significantly simplified through innovative computational approaches. Sensors collect a variety of heterogeneous data sets that can be used, e.g., to estimate the life time of civil engineering structures. In the past several years, building information modeling (BIM) has substantially contributed to the success of the field of Computing in Civil Engineering. This paper presents selected areas of Computing in Civil Engineering that have been a matter of research within the past 15 years. Also, current challenges in research and teaching are discussed.
