Abstract
Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin diseases and also one of the lead diagnoses in dermatology. The pathogenesis of acne is dominated by the interplay between excessive sebum production, hypercolonization with Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), hyperproliferation/hyperkeratosis of the infrainfundibulum of the hair follicle and inflammation. Acne is also a cardinal component of many systemic diseases or syndromes. Their association illustrates both the nature of these diseases and the pathogenesis of acne.
