Abstract

The airside airport capacity is not only critical for the performance, but also for the functional stability of the air transportation system as a whole. Analyzing airport congestion and traffic flows within and between air transport network regions provide indications on the current state of congestion and growth potential within the air transportation system. By breaking down regional traffic flows into interregional and intraregional traffic, vital information are obtained to determine means of future growth. Inherent network design risks can also be identified which take into account the unique operating characteristics of the different global network regions.
