Advanced neutron instrumentation at FRM-II

Abstract

FRM-II, the new German neutron source, has been completed as a replacement of the Munich research reactor. FRM, which had been in operation since 1957 and decommissioned in 2000. The new facility is waiting for the permit for nuclear commissioning and subsequent routine operation. In routine operation, five in-pile facilities and fourteen beamline experiments will be ready for operation. The latter are mainly neutron scattering experiments for non-destructive materials research. Some of these tools are unique, others will he the best of their kind, and all are based on innovative technologies. Other tools are under construction. The FRM-II concept provides high neutron flux densities, thus offering possibilities of high-level research and application with maximum safety and environmental compatibility acknowledged worldwide. FRM-II is a powerful neutron source which will allow Germany to make a decisive contribution to international cooperation.
