Abstract

The early chapters of this book indicate that bodily distress syndromes are common and may be very disabling and expensive to health services. The data also indicate a wide range of severity of these disorders, which becomes important when considering the need for treatment. In general, a very high number of somatic symptoms is associated with marked disability and high costs.
