Abstract

An ultra-wideband (UWB) dielectric loaded biconical antenna is described. It exhibits a two octave bandwidth of 2-8 GHz. Whithin this range an input reflection below -10 dB and a frequency dependent gain ranging of 0.4-3.9 dBi is achieved. The radiation pattern maintains almost constant in the E-plane. Parasitic sidelobes arising at higher frequencies are kept at least 13 dB below the maximum of the main lobe level. The shape of the normalized impulse response varies only in its scale in an angular range of ±60°. Thus the antenna is an ideal choice for UWB channel characterization.
