Abstract
A checker-board surface-barrier Si(Li) detector for low energy γ rays is described together with its read-out system. The counter has 64 elements of 2×5 mm2 each, but requires only 16 electronic circuits for the read out through the use of coincidence techniques. Energy resolution (<2 keV fwhm), counting rate efficiency (>95%) and background (<0.01 cpm/keV/element) for 14.4-keV γ rays are essentially the same for all elements. The response of the counter to radiation falling between two elements has been studied and causes no problems. Such a detector, modified in element geometry for protein structure analysis, shows similar characteristics.
