Abstract

A Monte Carlo analysis of the tensile failure of a seven-fiber, hexagonal array, microcomposite is described. Weibull statistics are used to generate individual fiber strengths within a chain-of-bundles structural model. The effect of load transfer through matrix shear is simulated by using local load sharing among surviving fibers. The results of the simulation are used to conduct a parametric analysis of bundle strength. The model is also compared with experimental results obtained with hexagonal fiber bundles consisting of seven IM-6 graphite filaments.
