Abstract

Modern satellite structures are equipped with hundreds of sensors for monitoring their condition, e.g. mechanical or thermal loads, during testing and operation. The large amount of sensors leads to a high integration effort, high mass and complexity of harnessing if conventional electrical sensors are used. An alternative is the application of a fiber optic sensor (FOS) network. Fiber optic sensors are light in weight, small in size and easy to multiplex. Thus they offer a good basis for an integrated "nervous system" for satellite structure monitoring. In this article the focus is on an integrated temperature sensor network for satellite sandwich panels. Since satellite structures are exposed to special environmental conditions like high static and dynamic mechanical loads, a wide range of thermal loads and vacuum conditions, a special sensor design and integration technique are required.
