Abstract

Within the context of a project to protect the city of Muscat from flash floods on the wadi Aday, Sogreah Consultants, on behalf of the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, designed an ambitious development scheme based on the construction of seven dams. The main dam in this scheme is equipped with a labyrinth spillway with a flow capacity of 5850m3/s. The design of this complex structure was initially based on technical literature before being refined through a physical modelling procedure. In this respect, Sogreah carried out a programme of 1:40 scale model tests in its hydraulics laboratory in order to check and finalise the structural design.
