Abstract

Limited angle operation of an actuator is being envisaged with dc limited angle torque motor, a special type of brushless motor. This paper explains the design, analysis and realization of a Wide Angle Torque motor for spacecraft mechanism application in detail. Configuration study was carried out with four different types of brushless dc motors and a suitable Wide Angle Torque motor was selected based on the application need. Modelling and analysis of a bipolar brushless dc motor is carried out using finite element analysis and optimized to deliver flat torque for 180 deg. and commutation free region for 90 deg. The designed motor is realized and characterized.
