Abstract

The field of clinical nutrition took root in Germany in the 1960s; the journal Aktuelle Ernährungsmedizin was founded in 1976. The then advances in surgery and intensive care medicine often required artificial feeding of patients. All the infusion solutions and tube feeding formulas developed by the industry had to be scientifically reviewed in clinical studies. At the same time, the preponderance of fringe diets were replaced according to a rationalization scheme by far fewer but clinically tested diet plans. The targeted results of oral, enteral, and parenteral nutrition were published regularly in Aktuelle Ernährungsmedizin. These scientific activities also led to the formation of research groups, the organization of numerous symposia, and the foundation of new scientific associations. One of the first was the German Academy for Nutritional Medicine (DAEM), followed somewhat later by the German Society of Nutritional Medicine (DGEM). These organizations, along with the Austrian Working Group for Clinical Nutrition (AKE), the Swiss Society for Clinical Nutrition (GESKES), and related professional associations, made the Aktuelle Ernährungsmedizin, to their official organ thereby securing a current readership of well over 4,000. Today, Aktuelle Ernährungsmedizin looks back on 40 successful years as the professional journal in the field of nutritional medicine. With original contributions, surveys, editorials, commentaries, viewpoints and the major DGEM Guidelines for Clinical Nutrition project, the journal has documented all the advances in nutritional medicine as well as made important ongoing contributions to advanced medical training in the Certified Medical Education (CME) section. Regular news and updates from the societies and beyond round out the range of information and solidify the reliable partnership of editors and readers.
