Abstract

After a paper on the definition, appeal and status of the term "ecology', the 105 papers are arranged in sections on: African ecology, chiefly forest and savanna vegetation ecology and distribution; population biology, including examples of plant populations and communities, birds and freshwater organisms, and metapopulation analysis; a cooperative research programme on isolation, patch size and biotope quality, with papers on the status and modelling of endangered species of lizard, grasshopper, butterfly, terrestrial snail, and the application of population genetics in species conservation; interactions between biosphere and atmosphere, beginning with a substantial paper on the effects of increased CO2 and other greenhouse gases on the biosphere, and continuing with the effects of atmospheric pollution and increased levels of CO2 on trees, foliage, photosynthetic processes, etc.; flora and fauna, particularly invertebrates, as well as evaluation and management of urban green space; environmental education; and miscellaneous papers. -J.W.Cooper
