Abstract

MicroRNA (miRNA) are master regulators of gene expression and impact cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis among others. They interact with their target messenger RNA to exert their function. Lately, miRNAs have been associated to many human diseases and their potential as biomarkers and therapeutic has been highlighted. The process of miRNA biogenesis and function is shown. Moreover, miRNA applications in medicine are presented in disease diagnosis or therapeutic use. The latter is presented in detail and illustrated with examples. Special attention is dedicated to the use of biomaterials loaded with miRNAs and their use in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
