Abstract
The evolutionary origins of the modern mammalian ear structures can be traced back into their phylogenetic predecessors in the Mesozoic Era. This evolutionary history shows a step-wise acquisition of middle- and inner-ear structures along separate Mesozoic mammal lineages that led to convergence of several derived characters correlated with distinct hearing functions in extant mammals.
