Abstract
Multimodality protocols, including limb-sparing resection and radio/chemotherapy, has become the treatment of choice in soft-tissue sarcomas in the limbs. In cases of extensive tumor spread or severe irradiation damage, however, amputation must still be considered. Out of 54 patients treated since 1978 by radical resection and immediate functional reconstruction, 21 received free microvascular tissue transplants, 23 tendon or muscle transplants, and 24 conventional flaps and grafts. Only 2 patients required primary amputation and 4 distalasation procedures, although 62% suffered from the first or second local recurrency. The advantages and limitations of plastic surgery procedures are presented.
