Abstract
Twenty patients with esophageal carcinoma were subjected to EKG tracings 24 h prior to surgery, 24 h postoperatively and on the 3rd postoperative day. Tracings were recorded using a 2-channel tape recorder (ICR 7200), and tape analysis was performed with the Holter Cardiography System, ICR 620163. Postoperatively, a significant increase in the heart rate and PAC was found. Fifty-three of the patients exhibited PVC (Lown class 3a-4b) prior to surgery. Postoperatively, the same arrhythmias in 89% of the patients were recorded. The results indicate that the incidence of cardiac arrhythmia in patients with esophageal carcinoma is as high as in control groups. However, following esophagectomy, attention must be paid to the increase in PAC and PVC.
