Abstract

The large-signal modulation characteristics of 1.3 μm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with buried tunnel junction and reduced cavity length are presented. A short overview of the VCSEL design and static device characteristics is given. Employing these devices, the error-free data transmission at 25 Gbit/s over up to 25 km of singlemode fibre is reported for the first time. The impact of transient laser chirp and fibre dispersion on the received optical power and the bit error rate is discussed.
