Abstract

On 16 May 2018, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) awarded American landscape architect James Corner an honorary doctorate, which marks the official launch of Inspiration High Line as part of a series books published by the Chair of Landscape Architecture and Industrial Landscape (German: Lehrstuhl für Landschaftsarchitektur und industrielle Landschaft, LAI) at the School of Architecture at the time.
This book is a multilingual compilation of 27 different short readings, of which 20 are in English and the remaining 7 are in German. Written by the experts and scholars in the field of landscape architecture both at home and abroad, the book brings together a wide range of reviews, analyses, comments and prospects on the High Line. Despite the short commentaries in the book, it still shows unique perspectives, novel ideas and explicit attitudes, implying valuable and precious critical thinking. By presenting Chinese readers with the praises and reflections of landscape architects from various countries on this world-renowned design work of post-industrial landscape, this book reveals not only the enormous impact caused by the success of the High Line in different respects, but also the untold stories and episodes behind it. Inspiration High Line demonstrates the understanding that landscape architects have of new urban nature, their interpretations of the transformation experienced by industrial derelict sites, their reviews on design paradigms and approaches to post-industrial landscape, as well as their expectations and visions for the urban landscape in the 21st century.
