Abstract

Serverless computing has the potential to produce a universal service platform by integrating an execution environment into networked devices. However, current serverless solutions are often limited to the cloud, Linux-based devices, and stateless functions. In this paper, we propose to integrate the actor model of computation with content-based networking to produce a serverless computing platform that can run on all devices from microcontrollers to cloud servers. We present the model of computation, a platform to realize it, a proof-of-concept implementation, and its evaluation. The resulting system is capable of placing interconnected serverless computations over the entire leaf-edge-cloud continuum.
