Abstract

Medical professional societies were requested to nominate experts in order to establish an S3 guideline group according to the regulations of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF). The interdisciplinary and inter-professional guideline group plus junior scientists were joined by a representative of the patients as well as a representative of the AWMF who supported the methodical realisation with her advice. Creation of the guideline proceeded in conformity with the provisions made by the AWMF and was based on the evaluation framework Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II. (Early) mobilisation, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, mobilisation aids and body positioning, including a prone position, were identified as central subjects and dealt with by the respective specializing expert groups. Potential conflicts of interest were carefully taken into consideration. The panel developed PICO questions (population, intervention, comparison groups and outcomes), conducted a systematic literature search including screening procedures and full text analyses and created summary tables based on the results. Evidence assessment was in conformity with the criteria of the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (2011), supplemented by a risk of bias analysis. The final recommendations were formulated in accordance with the GRADE standards and agreed upon in a multi-layer consensus procedure which comprised an online Delphi process and a concluding hybrid consensus conference. The original German version of the guideline has been authorised by the professional societies concerned and published by the AWMF. The literature survey of the current version has been updated to include April 2024 and the recommendations have been adjusted on the basis of the new knowledge gained from both systematic review publications and randomised control studies. Altogether, 46 recommendations have been elaborated, existing research gaps have also been identified.
