Abstract

Addition of diphenlycarbene to the RhRh bond of [(η5-C5Me5)Rh(μ-CO)]2 (I) results in clean formation of μ-C(C6H5)2[(η5-C5Me5Rh(CO)]2 (II) which, upon subsequent CO elimination and consecutive carbene (CH2) addition, gives the triply bridged derivative (μ-CH2)[μ-C(C6H5)2](μ-CO){(η5-C5Me5)Rh}2 (IV) in 91% overall yield. Compound IV is the first known organometallic molecule containing structurally different methylene bridges.
