Abstract

The diazoalkane method has been utilized for the simple synthesis of the first known example of a μ-methylene(nitrosyl) complex: bis[(η5-cyclopentadienyl)(μ-nitrosyl)iron](FeFe) (I) which reacts with diazomethane (II) in the temperature range -80 to +25°C to give μ-methylenebis[(η5-cyclopentadienyl)nitrosyliron](FeFe) (III) as a black, crystalline, air-stable compound which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H NMR and mass spectra. The successful synthesis of III points to the general applicability of the carbene addition reaction onto metal-metal multiple bonds.
