Abstract

The 20e-compound bis(η6-hexamethylbenzene)iron acts as a productive source of (C6Me6Fe-fragments upon treatment with the half-sandwich complexes of the cobalt triad, giving the novel heterodinuclear Fe/Co, Fe/Rh, and Fe/Ir complexes (3), respectively, which contain formal double bonds between the various metal atoms. The respective homodinuclear species are formed in side reactions. The unsaturated bonding situation in the heterodinuclear compounds results in a clean take-up of methylene groups; this has been proved for the reaction of the Fe/Ir-compound with diazomethane, which results in quantitative production of the new methylene complex (μ-CH2)[{η-C5Me5Ir(CO)}- {(η6-C6,Me6)Fe(CO)}].
