Abstract
In Germany, the international PISA survey was considerably extended in 2003. The sample size was substantially increased to provide detailed results for the sixteen German Länder [Districts] on all issues addressed on a worldwide scale. Moreover, the national design includes an oversampling of students with a migration background. Newly developed national tests for science and problem-solving investigated facets not covered internationally, thus yielding a more comprehensive picture of these domains. Additional school and teacher questionnaires focused on specific challenges schools face in Germany, and identified the actions schools take to address these challenges. Finally, to monitor progress in class, the measurement of mathematics and science competencies was repeated after one school year for a subset of students. The present paper paradigmatically illustrates the benefits of enlarging the international core design of PISA, and presents the key results thus obtained.
