Abstract

Based on the fast changes of the visual landscape through wind power plants in many parts of the Federal Republic of Germany the study tries to empirically inventorise possible aesthetic losses of the landscape through the establishment of wind power plants. Therefore the aesthetic perceptions of two student groups looking at pictures of a landscape without as well as with two, six and twelve wind power plants in the same landscape are investigated systematically. The results show that firstly all landscape views with wind power plants are experienced significantly more negative, and secondly the aesthetic perceptions are the more negative the more wind power plants are densely arranged in a landscape section. It is emphasised that the nature conservation legislation, which explicitly establishes the public right to landscape beauty and landscape-related recreation, not covers the emerging area-wide aesthetic deformations of the landscape caused by wind power use in large parts of Germany. This leads to an increasing need of political and legal action.
