Project Details

Description

The planning of multimodal transport systems is often based on only a single forecast scenario: the (car-based) morning commute to the city. The required infrastructure is then provided. Various disruptions, which deviate from this scenario, can severely impact the performance of transportation systems: e.g., demographic change, pandemic, new technologies, regulation. The uncertainty in their occurrence leads to the research question of how to plan a resilient transportation system to ensure long-term performance in accessibility, trip capacity, and sustainability even in the face of uncertainty in the future. READAPT’s project goal is to develop methods for identifying resilience boosters in the multimodal transportation system to ensure this performance. An essential part of the innovation is to consider not only the addition of new system elements to boost resilience, but also the possibility of transformation or re-adaptation of system elements. The developed approaches are demonstrated with case studies using computer simulation. The results of this project will help ensuring a resilient, adaptable, and emission-minimal transportation system in a future with uncertainties.
