Research interests

Julian Schäfer is a landscape architect and urban planner holding a doctoral degree. In his teaching and research, he focuses on landscape architectural design at the regional scale, with an emphasis on cultural landscapes. He also addresses urban development processes at the urban design level, particularly in peri-urban areas and in small-town and rural contexts. Alongside his academic appointment, he works as an independent practitioner in landscape architectural design and urban project development.

His research examines public open spaces in rural areas and explores approaches for their further development. It also investigates spatial textures in cultural landscapes and analyzes their qualitative characteristics. In applied research, he works on the transformation and qualitative enhancement of commercial and industrial zones. He also addresses the upgrading of single-family housing estates.

At the Technical University of Munich, he develops and leads seminars and design studios. These formats are closely aligned with his research agenda. They deepen his research themes through experimental and practice-oriented approaches.
