Research interests

The independent field of research and development in chemistry education is chemistry-related teaching and learning. Prof. Koenen’s work has significantly impacted this field, particularly through her fundamental research into teaching and learning in chemistry both in schools and universities. The focus is on developing, analyzing, and promoting professional knowledge in teacher training and further education (research area 1) and developing and evaluating teaching and learning materials for teaching at schools and universities (research area 2).

In addition to digitally supported training for future chemistry teachers in Bavaria, characterized by intensive support and empirical foundation with simultaneous practical orientation, research will focus on teacher professionalization in scientific inquiry, digitization, and education for sustainable development.

The central importance of these topics for research and teaching contributes to a high practice and application orientation of her research and to a empirical foundation and topicality of teaching.
