Scientific Career

Professor Algül specializes in pancreatic cancer, with a particular focus on metabolism and the immune system. The strong association between cancer cachexia and pancreatic carcinoma underlines the importance of metabolism. Autophagy has been identified as a key mechanism in the regulation of metabolism. The extent to which this process is related to cachexia is to be investigated by means of in vivo models with the aim of identifying new therapeutic target structures. In addition to his research into tumor metabolism, Professor Algül also investigates the mechanisms of spontaneous and inflammation-associated carcinogenesis in the pancreas. The objective of this research is to deepen our understanding of how the immune system affects tumorigenesis in the pancreas and thus to obtain insights that can serve as the basis for the development of innovative therapeutic procedures.

Professor Algül studied at the University of Ulm and the University of California Davis, USA. Since 2003, he has been working as a Clinician Scientist at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of TUM. In 2017, Professor Algül was appointed to the Chair of Tumor Metabolism at TUM.
