Scientific Career

Prof. Bornemann (b. 1967) conducts research on the numerical analysis of multiscale problems. In particular, he is interested in the interplay between efficient algorithms and the basic mathematical understanding of a problem. His methods and algorithms are used in medical technology, natural sciences and digital image processing. They are, however, also used for the computer-assisted solution of problems within mathematics itself.

After studying mathematics at Freie Universität Berlin, he completed his doctorate there in 1991. In Berlin, he worked at the Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum (ZIB), initially as a research fellow helping to set up the "Numerics and Modeling" department, where he later took the position of scientific head. Prof. Bornemann spent a year as a visiting scientist at New York University (1996/1997). In 1998, he was appointed to the Chair of Scientific Computing at TUM. From 2001 to 2004, Prof. Bornemann served on the board of the German Mathematical Society. He was a member of the Mathematics Review Board of the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2008 to 2011. From 2012 to 2018, he was appointed to the DFG selection board for Collaborative Research Centers. Since 2018, he has been dean of the TUM Department of Mathematics.
