Scientific Career

Professor Heinz (b. 1956) conducts research in the field of mineral building materials, particularly cements and other basic ingredients of concrete. His main areas of interest include using chemical technology to optimize the performance of building materials, the utilization of secondary raw materials and the improvement of eco-efficiency in the production and application of building materials.

Professor Heinz studied metallurgy and materials engineering at RWTH Aachen. He went on to work as a research fellow at the university’s Institute of Mineral Engineering (GHI) where he obtained his doctorate in 1986. The next 11 years were spent working in industry – most recently as head of development at a company involved in the materials management of residues from coal fired power plants and other secondary raw materials. In 1997 he returned to RWTH Aachen where he was appointed to the Chair of Mineral Building Materials Production. In 2001 Professor Heinz assumed his current position at TUM’s Center for Building Materials (cbm). He declined the offer of an appointment to a chair at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) in 2006. Professor Heinz is a member of several expert panels and standardization committees.
