Birgit Herbst-Gaebel is a scientist and science manager. She studied Biology at Philipps University Marburg. Following research at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology in Marburg and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology in Freiburg, she completed her doctorate at the University of Freiburg in the Department of Hematology and Oncology at the University Medical Center Freiburg. Her research focused on the biology of dendritic cells and their application in tumor immunotherapy. This work resulted in several scientific publications, a patent, and a Phase I clinical trial on melanoma immunotherapy.
Following her doctorate, she joined CellGenix, now Sartorius CellGenix GmbH, a biomedical spin-off of the University Medical Center Freiburg, where she contributed to the development of a GMP-compliant manufacturing process for the clinical application of her research. She subsequently worked as Product Manager for Chlamydia Serology at medac GmbH in Hamburg. She later joined the University of Göttingen, where she developed and established two international Master’s programmes in Biology as part of the Bologna Process.
Today, she serves as the President’s Delegate for the TUM Senior Excellence Faculty at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Together with the TUM Emeriti of Excellence, she develops and coordinates programmes as well as scientific exchange and collaboration formats and coordinates cooperation with the Executive Board, the Schools, and external academic partners. She is also co-editor of several books published by TUM.University Press.
