Scientific Career
From 2003-2009 Allan Buras studied Physical Geography at the LMU Munich. Based on a research stay at the University of Svalbard on Spitzbergen, he received his diploma degree on 'Ecological investigatons on Euphrasia wettsteinii in Colesdalen, Svalbard' in 2009 with an excellent score (1.0) under the supervision of Prof. Inger Greve Alsos (UNIS) and Prof. Dr. Carola Küfmann (LMU).
From 2009-2013 he was enrolled as a Ph.D.-candidate at Greifswald University under the supervision of Prof. Martin Wilmking (Ph.D.) focusing on the quantification of the carbon sequestration potential of Central Asian Desert ecosystems. He graduated in October 2013 with 'magna cum laude'.
From 2013-2015 Allan Buras continued his research at Greifswald university as a Helmholtz stipend within the virtual ICLEA institute, working on integrated climate- and landscape evolution analyses by means of dendroecological assessments.
From 2015-2017, he pursued a new post-doc position with Prof. Dr. Annette Menzel at the professorship of ecoclimatology, TU Munich, where he combined dendroecological investigations and tree-species models to assess the current and potential future performance of dominant European tree-species.
From 2017-2018 he became a DAAD-stipend at Wageningen University and Research (Netherlands) together with Prof. Ute Sass-Klaassen which was succeeded by a 3 month post-doc position at the group of Frits Mohren (forest ecology and forest management, also at WUR).
In September 2018, he returned to TU Munich at the professorship of land surface-atmosphere interactions (Prof. Dr. Anja Rammig) where he has been enrolled since then. His recent work focuses on the remote-sensing based assessment of forest condition, involving the development and management of the European Forest Condition Monitor, as well as tree-species specific climate-change vulnerability assessments by means of dendroecology, remote sensing, and modelling.
Up until February, 2026, Allan Buras has published 95 peer-reviewed research articles, received several smaller grants (e.g. DAAD-scholarship) and coordinated 2 third-party funded projects. His work has been cited more than 8,300 times (H-index: 39). Moreover, his research has gained public attention by prominent German and international news outlets such as the Tagesschau and the New York Times.
