Abstract

A method for producing high-strength, complex components is described which can be manufactured by automated processes. The reciprocating knitting technique can be used to knit very stiff yarns (carbon fibre and ceramic fibre). Production aspects and questions of cost are addressed. End-uses for the knitted-fabric-reinforced composites are in shipbuilding, the car industry and aerospace engineering, as well as in bone prostheses.
