Abstract

Prefabrication, a well-known concept in new timber construction - still needs the implementation of new methods in order to be applied in refurbishment projects. TES Energy Façade and the follow-up smartTES, two international research consortia, work on this idea since 2008. Since then the TES façade elements for energy efficient retrofit of the building envelope with prefabricated timber-based elements are demonstrated in several projects. A first milestone was the definition of an integrated work process starting from planning, digital survey, prefabrication and assembly. A key feature was the development of the joints of façade elements for certain assembly routines and structural properties. Further solutions are dealing with fire safety, thermal and moisture behavior in specific climate conditions, the integration of other components and building services, the adaption to existing building types, and the ecologic quality for sustainability. This report shows the application of TES in a refurbishment of a six storey dwelling.
