Abstract

The behavior, strength and elasticity of concrete changes if it is exposed to fire loads. The University of Stuttgart has developed a model that represents a complete coupling of the thermal, hygric and mechanical properties of concrete and can also simulate explosive concrete spelling under fire loads. The numerical simulation results are verified in two different series of experiments. Firstly, a modified permeability experiment measures the permeability of high-performance concrete (HPC) at elevated temperatures. Secondly, relative large test blocks are used to capture and monitor crack formation in HPC in the fire experiment. The installed sensors record the acoustic emissions waves and are later analyzed with respect to the initial location (crack formation), number and size of the cracks. Using this model and the observations derived from the acoustic emission analyzed, the fracture mechanisms that occur during explosive spalling can be better understood.
