Abstract

Isolation, cell cultivation, and characterization of umbilical cord stromal cells (UCSC) of the Wharton's jelly, the major source cell population of the UC tissue, were discussed. Umbilical cord (UC) tissue was minced, and UCSC were extracted by sprouting out of the tissue pieces or by enzymatic dissociation. Different cultivation protocols were compared to optimize long term expansion. It was observed that primary UCSC had a morphology and protein expression pattern typical for a myofibroblast.
