TRANSMISSION METALENS FOR ULTRASOUND FOCUSING IN WATER

Abstract

Planar lenses for ultrasound focusing in water environments have a wide potential for a variety of application, including medical ultrasound, imaging techniques and ultrasonic communications. In this work we develop a transmission metalens allowing focusing of ultrasound in water. The metalens consists of several finite-size gratings allowing diffraction primarily into one particular transmission channel. Using numerical calculations and optimisation techniques we develop a design of the gratings with maximized transmission into -1 channel. Then we combine them in such a way that the diffracted waves converge at a focal point, which is also demonstrated via numerical calculations. It was shown that the developed design allows to achieve focusing for metallic as well as polylactic acid (PLA) made metalens. Since the design is based on physical principles parameters of the metalens can be adjusted to the desired frequency and focal distance.
