Abstract

Due to their good noise characteristics hypoid gears, which are used for power transmission between non-parallel axes, are preferably used in automotive applications. With increasing offset the sliding in tooth profile direction is superimposed by a component of sliding in tooth width direction. Due to these high sliding conditions, there is a high risk for scuffing of hypoid gears. The load carrying capacity regarding scuffing can be explicitly improved by using special gear lubricants. For testing high-alloyed hypoid oils, the scuffing test A/44/Cr has been developed at the Gear Research Centre. Its main purpose is to investigate the load carrying capacity regarding scuffing as well as wear and temperature behaviour of lubricants. The investigation of the lubricant is carried out as a step-test using a specially designed hypoid gear set. The torque on the test gear is increased in pre-defined steps until scuffing occurs or load stage eleven is passed without failure. The lubricant characteristics regarding scuffing and wear are investigated by documenting the oil sump temperature, the condition of the flank and the loss of weight of the test gear. Within this paper the failure mechanism of scuffing is explained, calculation methods to determine the load carrying capacity regarding scuffing of hypoid gears are presented and the test method A/44/Cr for testing the scuffing and wear behaviour of hypoid oils is described.
